about

The By & By, a Boston-based trio, continues to redefine American Roots music with their distinct blend of country, gospel, and blues. Comprised of Leah Hennessy (vocals), Jacob Means (mandolin), and Brad Barrett (bass), The By & By are excited to announce their newest record, Time Slips Away out on Adhyâropa Records March 1st.

The group’s sound emerges from the interplay of traditions and technique. Each member brings a rich musical heritage to the ensemble. Jacob Means, with roots in Wyoming, was steeped in Bluegrass from an early age, while Leah Hennessy's upbringing in South Carolina immersed her in the sacred sounds of gospel and Country music’s Golden Age. Brad Barrett's Dallas upbringing was infused with the blues of Texas and the musical legacy of the Mississippi Delta.

After converging at Boston’s New England Conservatory for their studies, The By & By embarked on a journey of musical exploration, drawing from these diverse backgrounds. Their debut album, "Some Bright Morning" (2016), received critical acclaim and set the stage for their innovative approach to American traditional music.

Legendary guitarist, author, and New England Conservatory Professor, Joe Morris said of the album, "This is something new and meant to be heard with fresh ears as a beautiful take on something you love."

Now, with the release of Time Slips Away under Adhyâropa Records, The By & By delivers a new chapter in their musical evolution. Recorded in 2020, this long-awaited album showcases the band's growth and maturity since their debut. Joined by Dor Hershkovits, a Boston-based drummer, the trio delves deeper into their collective artistry, continuing to update and recontextualize the canon of American folk musics as well as develop their own original material. Three of the tunes on the new record were penned by Hennessy and arranged by the band collectively: “Ruth”, “Two Roots”, and “Aberdeen”. Time Slips Away also features contributions from Ted Reichman (Anthony Braxton, John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet) on accordion and organ, and additional drums from Ariel Bernstein. Throughout this music there is a strong sense of rhythmic counterpoint amongst the distinct voices, almost as if they are dancing off of each other and catching one another again at precisely the right moment.

Beyond their musical endeavors, the members of The By & By have pursued diverse paths. Brad Barrett remains active in the Northeast jazz and improvised music scene, collaborating with Tyshawn Sorey, Taylor Ho Bynum and Jerry Bergonzi. Jacob Means furthered his studies at Berklee College of Music, refining his craft under esteemed mentors such as Danilo Perez and John Patitucci.

Leah Hennessy serves as the Creative Director at Music Box Village in New Orleans, working closely with artists such as Nicholas Payton, Alabaster DePlume, and The Sun Ra Arkestra. Her solo debut is also due out in late Spring 2024.
